The story behind Isak
Isak Hearthstone, from an abandoned mine in Breckenridge, Colorado, was named by three young girls who brought a heart-shaped stone, which they placed in his chest. Built from local recycled wood with volunteer help, Isak became so popular that he attracted over 3,000 visitors on some days.
Dambo names his trolls to honor their creators, implying a personal connection and acknowledgment of the community’s involvement, though the specific person referred to as “Isak” is not identified.

From destruction to beauty, a beautiful conlcusion.
Isak Hearthstone’s first home was an abandoned mine in Breckenridge, Colorado, where he became a popular attraction. As visitors flocked to see him, concerns about traffic emerged, leading to a city council’s decision to dismantle him despite protests from fans. Artist Dambo’s poignant plea for a new home for Isak went viral, inspiring community support. A year later, Dambo returned to rebuild Isak with local help, reuniting with the three girls who originally assisted in the project, culminating in a heartfelt reconstruction and placing the heartstone back in Isak’s hollow chest, symbolizing hope and resilience.

from the Artist:
I’ve spent my life going off the beaten path—literally. I was always the kid crawling into the bushes, jumping over fences, and digging through the trash. These days, I’m considered the world’s leading recycle artist, after spending the past nine years making giant troll sculptures that have drawn millions of people away from their screens and out into the incredible natural world that surrounds us. – Thomas Dambo
